[Technical Notice] How to set up the GV-Failover Server with 2 GV-VMS Systems

Summary
This document covers the basic instructions on setting up the GV-Failover Server. A GV-Failover Server can support up to 128 IP Cameras channels, which are two 64-channel GV-VMS at the maximum. For optimal performance and processing efficiency, use two Gigabit network connections, each assigned with 64 channels and run through a separate network. Follow the steps below to install the GV-Failover Server and connect the 2 64-channel GV-VMS to the server.

Required Items for Installing GV-Failover Server
1. Setting up Hardware Infrastructure
The illustration below outlines the simple system structure of the GV-Failover Server. You can apply the formula to more complex circumstances.

  1. Divide 128 IP Cameras into 2 separate network segments.
  2. Assign an IP address to each camera under different network segments. For example:
    Set the camera’s IP address from 192.168.0.2 to 192.168.0.65 for Subnet (1).
    Set the camera’s IP address from 192.168.1.2 to 192.168.1.65 for Subnet (2).
  3. Distribute the camera channels evenly between 2 subnets by using 4 GV-POE2401 V2 24 port-Switches and 2 GV-POE1601 V2 16 port-switches to balance the traffic load.
  4. Connect 6 10/100 switches in each subnet to 2 additional Gigabit switches, GV-POE0811 V2 (A) and GV-POE0811 V2 (B) respectively.
  5. Connect 1 GV-VMS system to GV-POE0811 V2 (A) and the other to GV-POE0811 V2(B), each through 1 Gigabit network adaptor. Make sure you assign an IP address to each adaptor. For example:
    The IP address of Adaptor (A) / GV-VMS system (A) is 192.168.0.100, and is connected to GV-POE0811 V2 (A).
    The IP address of Adaptor (B) / GV-VMS system (B) is 192.168.1.100, and is connected to GV-POE0811 V2 (B).
  6. Connect the 2 GV-VMS systems to the GV-Failover Server by using 2 additional Gigabit network adaptors. Make sure the adaptor’s IP address is configured under separate subnets. For example:
    Set the IP address for Adaptor (1) / GV-Failover Server to 192.168.0.110 and connect the adaptor to GV-POE0811 V2 (A).
    Set the IP address for Adaptor (2) / GV-Failover Server to 192.168.1.110 and connect the adaptor to GV-POE0811 V2 (B).

Connecting GV-VMS to GV-Failover Server
Once the hardware setup is completed, you can proceed to the steps below to connect the GV-VMS to the GV-Failover Server.
  1. On the main screen of GV-VMS, click Home, select Toolbar, click Configure, and select Camera Install.
  2. Click Add Camera to add 64 camera channels in each subnet into GV-VMS.

  3. To enable the connection with GV-Failover Server, click Home, Toolbar, Network and select Failover Plugin.

  4. In the IP address box, type the IP address of the network adaptors for the GV-Failover Server. Make sure you change the IP address to match the network when repeating the same step for the other GV-VMS system. For example:
    In GV-VMS (A), type 192.168.0.110
    In GV-VMS (B), type 192.168.1.110

  5. Click Select Camera. A camera list appears.

  6. Click the arrow button to add the camera channels to the Selected camera list.

  7. Click Start Service to enable the connection between the GV-VMS and the GV-Failover Server. Make sure the GV-Failover Server is activated before you start the service.

  8. Repeat the same steps for the other GV-VMS system.
2. Connecting GV-Failover Server to GV-VMS
Once the setup is completed on both GV-VMS systems, you can proceed to the steps below to configure the GV-Failover Server.
  1. On the taskbar, right-click the Server Service Manager icon, and select Start Service to activate the GV-Failover Server.

  2. Right-click the Server Service Manager icon again, and select Access Web Interface.

  3. Type the account and the password to log on to the Web Interface. By default, the ID and Password are admin / admin.
  4. Select Host List at the left menu of Web Interface. You can find the host information and the number of cameras connected to the GV-VMS in the Host List.

  5. Select Storage Path under Server to configure the storage settings. Depending on the resolution and bitrate of the IP Camera, follow the table below to set up the maximum channels per hard disk for each storage group.

When the GV-VMS systems are unable to record live view, the GV-Failover Server will connect to GV-VMS (A) and subsequently GV-VMS (B) to take over the recording.
